German term or phrase: Rolle vs. Walze
I have a whole list of different types of ...rolle and ....walzen on a website. Does anyone know the precise definition of which is a 'roll' and which a 'roller' in English? I always considered a roll to be a cylinder that simply rotates and a Walze as a cylinder that rotates while applying a coating, etc. to a surface, but maybe it should be the other way round. Can anyone help?

English translation:Roll vs. roller/cylinder
Explanation:
A roll is passive, like a roll of paper, yarn etc (of course, also in a transliterated sense, a roll call [i.e.of names]), but a roller is always active, e.g. the printing 'roller/cylinder' on the offset machine imprints the web which winds up as a 'roll'

neutral  Gudrun Maydorn: A lot depends on context. In the context of conveyor belts, the idler rollers are the passive ones (They roll along, so to speak, but are not directly attached to a shaft-mounted drive.)

-> No, they are not, they serve a technical purpose because without them the conveyor belt wouldn't work.

Lenkrolle and Bockrolle are also often simply called Rolle. They are Castors (also called Castor wheels).

Sorry, it should be castor (lower case).
