It's more work for them to process a bank transfer "by hand" then for them to handle an electronic transfer. Checks also involve a lot of time and effort. So it's not the amount of money involved that pushes up the fees, but rather the amount of time and effort involved.

Here "Aufwand" has to do with word/effort, not with expenditure.

On second thought, you might want to write something like this: "Extra processing fees are billed separately and vary depending on the SERVICE offered."

In other words, instead of focusing on the work and processing involved, you could broaden the scope with the word "service". This might be better because, in addition to the extra work invoved in cashing a check, there may also be extra fees incurred by the bank (i.e., a mixture of "work" and "expenditure" for the financial institution) that are then passed on to the customer.

In any case, the "Aufwand" mentioned here goes beyond just "expenditure". It also involves plain old banker's elbow grease (fill out the form, Joe).

When I say extra "expenditure" incurred by the bank, I'm thinking of outside fees charged by other financial institutions.
