Actually, parental leave might be a better term, as suggested by the second response. In this particular case, however, the parent is female. Also, generally in U.S. usage the parental leave period is not broken down further into sub-periods, as is the case in Germany.

"maternity leave" may not be quite the best answer


Explanation:
"maternity leave" may not be quite the best answer because that really is "Mutterschutz",
"Erziehungsurlaub" starts after that and either the father or mother can take it. It would sound a little strange for the father to say he was on maternity leave. Since we don't have the concept yet, we don't have a good simple word for it. I would explain it. Exact info with length of time, rules, etc under "Erziehungsurlaub" at AltaVista, but I couldn't find a name.
