German term

zur Visa

German to English Law/Patents Law (general)
From an 1833 Bavarian passport: "Der Inhaber ist gehalten, den Paß jeder Königl. Bayer. Gesandtschaft und jedem Königl. Consulate, deren Sitz er berührt, zur Visa vorzulegen."
Am I correct in assuming that "zur Visa" in this context means that it must be seen, e.g. for verification that he is there?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 20, 2004:
correction The date of the passport was 1852. (1833 was the emigrant's birth year)

must present the passport for viewing

Visum of course comes from Latin and it is the past participle of videre (to see) so it means actually "gesehen."
So it could mean simply present the passport to be seen or viewed. On the other hand, since we know that today a visa is basically a notation on a passport that in effect allows a person to enter or leave a country, Kim may be right here, i.e., the passport must be presented so that a visa can be noted thereon.
It's up to you.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ingrid Blank : sorry about the half-finished sentence regarding the previous question - I wanted to know if one cannot leave out "Sitz berühren" altogether and as you suggested just say "enters the domain...", it surely would not distort the meaning of the sentence?

I think you're right. Thanks for the agree.

agree tnkw (X) : Might the expression 'tender for endorsement' have been used in English towards the middle of the 19th century?

That sounds like a good way of putting it. Thanks for the agree.

to receive a stamp in the passport

I think "zur Visa" means the person will receive a stamp in his passport.
Duden Universalwörterbuch - Visa, siehe Visum: Urkunde (in Form eines Vermerks im Pass) über die Genehmigung des Grenzüberschritts.
But, of course, this is the modern meaning so my proposal is just speculation.

to present the passport

Could you get away with just saying, "must present the passport to..."?
