German term or phrase: einen besonderen Platz einnehmen
Kupfer, Messing und Bronze sind seit Jahrtausenden bewährte, ökologische Werkstoffe. Dabei nimmt Messing einen besonderen Platz ein, weil es nicht nur ein vielseitiger, sondern gleichzeitig auch ein preiswerter Werkstoff ist.
This is the introduction to my text. Can anyone help with the above phrase?

plays a particularily (especially) important role

Explanation:
Copper, brass, and iron are ecological raw materials that have stood the test of millenia. Of the three, brass plays an especially important role, as it is not only a multi-purpose, but also an economically feasible raw material as well.

Ecological is a word that is missused in practically every language. Ecology (adjective: ecological) is the branch of biology that deals with how organisms adapt to and live in their environment. It implies no value judgment, ie. good or bad for the environment. Is ecological really what they mean here, or do they mean ecologically or environmentally friendly (umweltfreundlich)? I don't know just from this one sentence.
