To understand this, remember that Europeans live in small spaces and are very self-conscious about putting themselves in the right slot. This is one purpose of gallantry, dressing, etc. Your Auftritt is how you "step up", literally. So the game is not to find the word that translates Auftritt, it is to see how one would want to present an identity in the different contexts that you say it is hung onto, and use the right English word. |

Entry Explanation: How about entry? New perfumes make an entry, often with a splash <groan>. That's really what Auftritt means in its purest sense: the entry of an actor onto the stage. Just as does the entry of a new product into the advertising scene or the entry of yet another dot com into e-commerce. |
