German term or phrase: Antiques terms
Any antiques freaks out there? Am stuck on the following phrase in a description of a piece of Meissen:"Ausformung und Staffierung mit bunten Muffelfarben". TIA!
Heather
English translation:form (or shape); decorations; ceramic colours (?)
Explanation:
From the small Langenscheidts, Ausformung = form or shape. From my old Cassell's, Staffieren = trim or decorate, and Muffel = crucible (as used by chemists). Good luck!

The "Muffelfarben" were difficult: in the end, I settled on "ceramic glazes", a mixture of answers... Thanks v. much for all of your helpful explanations!

[muffel] kiln-dried colors

Explanation:
In ceramics, a "Muffelofen" = muffle kiln is often used for drying and curing.
Less likely, but in textiles (see Hohenadel's "A Modern Textile Dictionary"), there is Muff-Faerben = muff dyeing and is used in the dyeing of textured manmade fibers.

bunte Muffelfarben = coloured/colourful glazes

Explanation:
The Brockhaus Encyclopaedia has the following entry for Muffelfarben: 'Aufglasurfarben für keram. Erzeugnisse und Gläser, miest aus Metalloxyden oder deren Mischungen mit feingepulvertem, stark blei- und borsäurehaltigem Glas von niedriger Schmeltztemerpatur, die, in Öl angerieben und auf das Grundglas aufgemalt, im Muffelofen bei etwa 600–800° C eingebrannt werden.'

There may be a technical term for this in English, but glaze is probably close enough for a non-specialist.
