letter of recommendation
This is a reference letter for a former colleage. In unseren oft breit und umfassend angelegten Verhandlungen konnten wir auch feststellen, dass Herr x über großes Fachwissen, *vergleichsweise* von anderen Automobilmärkten außerhalb Deutschlands verfügt.
What is verlgleichsweise refering to here? How does it play into the rest of the sentence?
Does the guy have knowledge of other automobile markets or does he have comparatively extensive knowledge about other markets or what?

comparatively (or: relatively) speaking
Though I am not entirely happy about the German, especially the punctuation.

Thanks to the agrees below. As I said, I was unconvinced by the German. So presumably it\'s
... Herr x über vergleichsweise großes Fachwissen von anderen Automobilmärkten außerhalb Deutschlands verfügt
which can be rewritten as
... Mr X is quite/fairly/rather knowledgeable about autmotive markets outside Germany
where quite/fairly/rather seem to me equivalent to the German \'comparatively very\' ... :-)

Cilian O'Tuama
: maybe better if there were an "auch" after the vergleichsweise and a comma before the verfügt

Yes - that would solve it! Thanks.

: Strongly assuming that "vergleichsweise" was wrongly put in the source. It should precede "großes", which would make the comma after "Fachwissen" invalid. So Mr X has also got "a relatively sound/thorough knowledge of automotive markets outside Germany".

: there is a comma missing after vergleichsweise; otherwise the rest of the sentence would be completely wrong; the comma, however, would NOT be expected before verfügt. In other words, we are not told, in comparison to whom, but ABOUT WHAT he is knowledgab

He has extensive knowledge not only about the German market, but also about other markets outside of Germany
That's how I read it

: Wissen über oder in Bezug auf, nicht von, gleichermaßen statt vergleichsweise. Deien Version ist bisher die Überzeugendste.

in connection with
vergleichsweise ist auch im deutschen Text m. E. zweifelhaft. Sicher ist hier "in Zusammenhang mit..." gemeint

I think Elvira is on the right track. The German doesn't really make much sense.
