Mit meinen Zerstörversuchen am Karo beim Wertungsfahren fing's an, 1959, als du so manche Reparaturrechnung mir nie stelltest.
The 'du' in this sentence is Fritz Fend, creator of the bubble car (Karo - Kabinenroller [bubble car])and this sentence is a friend describing how their friendship began. I assume that 'Wertungsfahren' is test-drive but how could I translate 'Zerstörversuchen'?

As for Wertungsfahren I would translate with test drive. This is the term used to classify a trial of a car or any other motorized vehicle by means of driving it.

Explanation:
I think the writer could be being sarcastic or facetious at his own expense. I have spent ages trying to work out what "am Karo" means. The best I can do is "attempts at destruction of 'the diamond'" (hoping that that was their name for the car).

The fact that he refers to Fend's never charging him for so many repair-jobs connects with the so-called attempts at destruction.
