German term or phrase: Stamm-Nr
I would appreciate ideas on both the general translation of this term in companies but also more specifically in the context of the number given to a animal in a pedigree family tree software program. This number is often assigned by "kör" (breed survey) clubs to breeders' animals when they register them

Thanks, I think pedigree number works in the breeding asociation context. My Q wasn't very clear - the reason I mentioned companies too is that in some companies each member of staff is given a Stamm-Nr. Obviously there it is not pedigree number (!) and I wondered about the best translation in that context too?

line or lineage

Explanation:
I would not use pedigree in this context, but rather line, lineage, or possibly even family.

Stamm (Familie, Geschlecht) - stock, lineage, family, house, line
(Bakterienstamm) - strain

Stammbaum - family tree, genealogical tree, pedigree, lineage
seinen Stammbaum zurückverfolgen - to retrace one's line of ancestors

Stammbuch (for livestock) - herdbook; (for horses, dogs, etc.) - studbook

Stamm in terms of companies - I'm not sure what exactly you're asking here. Stamm is often used in a software context - Stammdaten - master data; Stammdatei - master file.
