the members of the local Swiss Guard Explanation: Schweizergarde (Swiss Guard) is the name of the corps of guards employed by the Vatican. Originally they were Swiss. But maybe this is not common knowledge. How about Honorary Church Guards? Roman Catholic myself |

sexton, sacristan, verger Explanation: Following Tom's lead, a synonym would be "Kirchendiener". According to Langenscheidt, there are three possible translations into English. "Verger" is chiefly British usage; so, depending on your target audience, choose wisely. Personally, I would go with sacristan, as this seems to be the more traditional and universal word in English.
