German term or phrase: ausgesetztes Allerheiligstes
From the same letter describing the interior of a church:
" wir liessen es uns nicht nehmen.... vor ausgesetztem Allerheiligsten unsere Gebete zu verrichten..."
Allerheiligstes is the sanctuary, would "ausgesetzt" mean that it is in some way exposed/revealed? Thanks for any help.

Displayed Blessed Sacrament
Explanation:
In the Catholic Church,
Das Allerheiligste, in this context, is the Blessed Sacrament, ie. the consecrated host, displayed openly in a monstrance; most times it is kept in the tabernacle.

In the Jewish and Orthodox Churches it means the inner sanctum of the church.
