recultivated

Explanation:
Just like you probably suspected. : ) My trustworthy Cassell's confirms the usage.

1 hr
recultivated

Explanation:
Daylong rainfalls had changed the recultivated heaps of charcoal into a muddy desert.

Kultivieren = cultivate
Rekultivieren exists also in Dutch
(re-c/k-ultiveren)

Landscaped

Explanation:
Recultivated isnt wrong but I reckon "Landscaped" would be more useful

3 hrs
recultivated/reforested

Explanation:
Definitely "recultivated" (per Wörterbuch Umweltschutztechnik by Egon Seidel). However, if you know that this was done by planting trees, then you may want to consider "reforested."

revegetated

Explanation:
Source:

revegetated, landscaped

Explanation:
I think the text refers to the existence of plants, not merely the preparation of the ground.

restored

Explanation:
"Recultivated" is fine, too, but my proposal is a word used a lot in connection with contaminated industrial sites which are cleaned up and grassed over at some stage.

restored etc., see explanation

Explanation:
I have not yet come across recultivation in the literature (although to be honest I have not looked for it on the Internet). To my mind, it is a "false friend". The fact that some dictionaries list it is not conclusive; few do, most don't, and rightly so.
Strictly speaking, reforest would suggest that the site was forested previously; do we know?

I offer the perinent excerpt from my own "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Environmental Policy and Management" (in progress, publication uncertain).
As German texts frequently use the terms Rekutlivierung/Renaturierung etc. very loosely, you may well be free to use whatever suits the tone of your text best.

Renaturierung restoration; rehabilitation; (engineered) regeneration

landscaped after all

Explanation:
After submitting my diatribe (twice by mistake, sorry), I thought about it again. I now humbly submit that, for the case of a coal tailings pile, "landscaped" would probably be best, after all. Catherine, this is your field, are you reading this? What do you think?
