Explanation:
The literal translation of 'defused' is handing for explosives, but there is no reason to believe the cage area will explode. :-) This suggestion is very informal. You might find a better one if there is someplace in the text that says why the situation was unpleasant to begin with. Then you can simply insert that adjective. For example, if the animals confinement made the it miserable, then the it became less miserable.
