leaders Explanation: I don't fully understand the context, but as you say it is about cycling I assume that Vorfahrer here are people who will ride bikes or drive cars at the front - to show others the way, or whatever. |

escort car Explanation: In American car races the escort car completes 2 turns around the track with the race participants following at a measured pace in their assigned starting order. Once the escort car veers off the track, the race proper starts with everybody going full throttle. Though it's technically the lead car, escort car means that it escorts the pack around the track. |
