German term or phrase: Auspuffschutz
A tractor was taken into a repair garage 'zur Überprüfung des Abfallens des Auspuffschutzes der Motorhaube'.
I assume this means that the mechanics are going to check why some sort of protective guard (?) for the exhaust is falling off. But where does the bonnet come into it? Is this exhaust guard near the bonnet and not near the back of a vehicle as I assume it would be on a car. Or am I totally wrong?

exhaust pipe guard
Explanation:
to check the falling off of the exhaust pipe guard of the bonnet.

Practically all tractors have vertical exhaustpipes, normally going through the bonnet. How this guards is fastened I have some difficulty understanding but is that important?

Explanation:
IF there was a mistake and they meant Auspuffstutzen, this is a support for the exhaust that is found on the motor. R Ernst gives the above translation for it. I see your problem, I've never heard of a Schutz for an exhaust.
