German term or phrase: Rationalisierungsmittelbaubetrieb
Aus dem ehemaligen Rationalisierungsmittelbaubetrieb der technischen Glasindustrie in Ilmenau wurde ein international anerkanntes Glasmaschinenbauunternahmen mit 35 Mitarbeitern und 5 Auszubildenden. Can anyone explain what a Rationalisierungsmittelbaubetrieb is? Thanks.

Explanation:
Rationailierungsmittelbau is a typical GDR term used to described any company which relied on its own resources for automating/mechanizing production processes. In other words - they built their own equipment. The same term exists in Russian which is translated as means of production or production facilities.

Explanation:
<Leipzig> is interesting.
I think you have to leave out the "Rationalisierung" and see "Mittelbau" as a type of company creating parts and components for other manufacturers. This also explains the change in the company to a firm producing finished machines.
