German term or phrase: Aufdatung
In an IT context (software specification) the heading "Datenmigration und Aufdatung" occurs. The explanation I've been given for "Aufdatung" is "Erstbefüllung mit vorhandenen, inhaltlich vernünftigen Daten"; the translation I've already used is "initial supply of data", although I'm wondering whether an IT term for "Aufdatung" actually exists or whether a different paraphrase could be used. Any help appreciated!

populate
Explanation:
The process of moving/putting data into fields and databases is often called "populating". That's the term that came to mind when I read your query.

While Microsoft does translate the English populate as populieren, I do think that it might be a legitimate choice here.

See the following from some 7,900 references:
Importing:
OK, now we had individual export files for each table. We needed to create scripts on the target database to create the new tables and populate them from the export files.

For the most part, each table required 2 scripts on the new system; one to pre-create the table, and a second that was executed after importing the data to rename the table, establish grants, define sequences, create indexes, public synonyms, etc.

Data migration requires all the original information to be evaluated and fields mapped across systems. This requires good technical skills which we possess - NIP can either populate the new system for you prior to deliver or provide reformatting routines for (repeat) use by the customer.

In addition to moving the data, there may be several systems that have data dependencies on the system to be replaced. With our Isolate and Migrate solution you can accomplish the transition with minimal risk to your operations and data. Using the Isolate and Migrate solution you can wean your systems from the older system over time while maximizing the benefit of the new replacement system. We extract the data from the older system to populate your new system with data, then we install a synchronization bridge from the new system back to the older system.

See how that would work in your context.

Just for reference and completeness' sake, here is the pertinent entry from Microsoft's Computer-Lexikon:
populieren Vb. (populate)
Importieren von vorbereiteten Daten aus einer Datei in eine Datenbank. Dieser Prozess wird nicht manuell durch Eingeben verschiedener Datensätze, sondern über eine Softwareprozedur ausgeführt.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. In the given context, "population" just takes the edge over "input" (which doesn't indicate that this an initial load of data). It's definitely not "updating", as the data are simply input, but not changed. Even better would be "loading of (new) data" which was suggested as an answer to my query which (erroneously) appeared in the "Easy" category.

aufdatieren is to update, so I woud think you could use "updating" in your text.

data migration and input

Explanation:
Why not using the old-fashioned "input" since it covers the meaning of the initial and recurrying supply of data.

Here is a paragraph from a Googel hit:
"The system is now ready for live implementation. The activities involved at this stage would be Data migration and input (if any), setting up of infrastructures like web hosting agencies, ISP, acquisition of back end servers, web servers, etc."

Update

Explanation:
From my years of work as a computer consultant - specialising in data migration, first in Germany, then in the US - I say that "Aufdatung" is a clumsy translation of "update".
The reason: Data migration is the ONE-TIME transport of data from an old computer system into a new one. These data has to be extracted from the old system while this is still being used, and there is a cutoff date for the data from the old system that are included into the data migration.
Data entered into the old system after the cutoff date (if the old system is still used for a transition period) has to be entered into the new system after it has received the one-time batch of data from the data migration, and this is usually done in the same way in which the database of the new system will be updated in normal operation: Typed into an update screen, for example.

Explanation:
is definitely it, NOT the other suggestions. I usually translate from English into German, and these are the terms in general use in IT contexts.
