German term or phrase: Schauglas
This term crops up in a document about leakages from pipe joints. Schauglas is a component that may also leak. It is given as inspection glass by Ernst but I'm not sure if this is right. What is an inspection glass exactly?
Julie
English translation:Inspection glass
Explanation:
For example on submarines, there is an inspection glass to show if the torpedo tubes are open or not. It is connected to the larger chamber by a small pipe and is used to detect the presence of water before opening any dangerous valves.

Explanation:
You know those glassy bubbles that you see at gasoline/petrol pumps at the end of the hose that goes into the pumping station? Where you can see air bubbles in the gasoline flow? That's an example of a Schauglas. And I'd agree with Ernst.

gage glass

Explanation:
Routledge also gives "gage glass" as a possibility when the field at hand is petroleum. Other possibilities include "sight glass" and "sight feed glass," the latter referring to machines. I found 128 hits for "gage glass" on the Northern Light Search Engine. Here's an example from one website (URL below) that might shed some insight into the problems asssociated with gage glass:
"After experiencing a problem on one of their off shore rigs, a major oil company requested that XY initiate a research program to develop better corrosion protection for offshore gage glass." In terms of its usage, users can look through gage glass in order to tell what's going on in the boiler, tank, pipe, etc. that the glass is built into/provides a view of.
