keypad

Explanation:
As far as I can determine after looking at dozens of sites in German and English, the translation should simply be: keypad = Tastenmatte - the keys or buttons are often only thicker parts of the larger flexible, somewhat soft plastic piece under the cover of a device such as mobile or car phone, as shown in Gendebien's own reference:

http://www.kaufinger.de/shop/3210.htm -

The keys or buttons protrude through holes in the cover. If one thinks about the components of the German and English words, it is logical. "Key" is "Taste" and "Pad" is "Matte".

It is not very fair to the asker to give obviously incorrect references like the ones below:

http://www.arcellular.com/6162.htm -

or

http://www.mobilizedcomm.com/digitalpcs2.htm -

The "protective keypad cover" shown in these two references could never be translated with "Tastenmatte". The article pictured might be a "Klappe" or "Deckel" but not a "Matte".

If, elsewhere in the text, the author should refer to a "Tastenfolie" then they could mean a "membrane keypad" or "keypad membrane" as in these references:

http://www.fasciagraphics.co.uk/membrane.html -

http://www.tsbvi.edu/math/talk-sci-calc.htm - HTH - Dan
