German term or phrase: Feile führen
Ok Dan, more context.
The problem is that "führen" here is very general.
Examples:
Das Halten und Führen der Feile beim Flachfeilen...
Das Feilenheft (file handle) ermöglicht eine gute Führung des Werkzeugs (der Feile).
Maybe "handling" is the right choice?

English translation:to handle, to hold, to use, to work with, to guide
Explanation:
to work with a file, to file, to smooth or shape the workpiece with a file, or to guide the file onto/over/along the workpiece.

The handle makes it possible to hold the file more comfortably and guide/control the file more exactly/accurately.

to guide or to direct

Explanation:
I think that the verbs to guide or to direct work best for fuehren. Not to sound condescending, but have you ever used a file? Then you know that the proper technique for filing is to stroke/move the file across its grain/teeth/grooves to get results.
