Unfallursachenbaum als Instrument zur Untersuchung von Unfällen:
Beim Unfallursachenbaum wird eine möglichst große Anzahl verschiedener Umstände und Ursachen zusammengetragen und in Form eines Baumes visualisiert. Oft wird erst dadurch erkennbar, welche Auswirkungen ein scheinbar unbedeutender Umstand auf das Unfallereignis haben konnte. Dahinter steckt die Idee, dass ein Ereignis immer mehrere Ursachen hat. Jede Ursache für sich genommen würde dieses Ereignis allein nicht auslösen können. Aber die Verkettung verschiedener Umstände führt schlussendlich zu einem Ereignis, zum Beispiel einem Unfall.
