Beim Trocknungsprozess bildet sich der Lackfilm durch Verdunsten des Wassers. Die Harzteilchen kommen in engen Kontakt, verformen sich, bis sich schließlich ein fester Film bildet. (Abbildung 2) Hierbei verdunsten auch die meist gut flüchtigen Neutralisationsmittel (z.B. Amine oder Essigsäure). Bei den ionisch hydrophilierten Harzen bleibt ein wasserresistenter Beschichtungsfilm zurück.
Einige Wasserlacke enthalten zusätzlich organische "Hilfslösemittel", sogenannte ***Colöser***. Der Zusatz von Colösern im Wasserlack verbessert die Löslichkeitsvermittelung und optimiert die Filmbildung im Trocknungsvorgang. Liegt der Anteil an organischen Lösungsmitteln unter 10 %, kann im Bautenlackbereich der Blaue Engel des Umweltbundesamtes vergeben werden.
