Das Prußenterritorium gliederte sich nach deren „Klans“ in elf Gaue, deren altpreußische Namen sich bis in die Gegenwart erhalten haben: Pomesanien, Pogesanien, Natangen, Nadrauen, Samland, Sudauen, Galinden, Warmien, Sassen, Schalauen und Barten.

Wydaje się, że w zależności od źródeł (polskie, krzyżackie, ruskie, litewskie) oraz form wymowy w literaturze występują min. 3 nazwy.
