Seit Beginn der Produktion ist bei der spanisch-maurischen Fayence der *Lüsterdekor* charakteristisch und herausragend entwickelt. Die Technik des Lüsterdekors - eine metallisch schimmernde Glasur auf Keramik - war im 9. Jahrhundert in Fostat, Ägypten und im persisch-syrischen Raum bekannt. Im 13. Jahrhundert erreichte die Kenntnis des komplizierten Herstellungsprozesses Spanien, wo sie mit Manises, Aragon und vor allem mit Malaga in Verbindung gebracht wird. Insbesondere in Malaga gelangte die Lüstertechnik zu hoher Kunstfertigkeit. Später wurde sie ausgiebig in Italien bei der Majolika-Herstellung verwandt. Kleinteilige Ornamentik, vielfach mit Wappen ausgestattet, sowie eine radiale Anordnung meist arabischer Motive, zeigen deutlich den Einfluss islamischer Keramik.
