German term or phrase: Linien
Linien [literally lines] as a unit of length: Die Areolen sind 6-8 Linien von einander entfernt. [The areoles are 6-8 lines apart.] So how wide was a "line" in Germany 150 years ago? From the context, it must be something less than a centimeter but probably not less than a millimeter.

agree  Richard Benham: Appears with this sense in Wahrig, albeit with an obelisk (indicating a defunct usage), in the sense of a small unit of length, "1/10 bzw. 1/12 Zoll".
