Is there a better phrase for Sonderkulturen other than specialised crops? Bearing in mind for this text we're talking about a kitchen garden, not really farming.

agree  John Speese: I would agree, specialty crops, or heirloom cultivars/varieties are other possibilities.

neutral  Martina Burkert: cultivar=Sorte; Heitloom=althergebrachte Sorten (oft im Gegensatz zu Hybriden). Sonderkulturen=specialty crops; Kulturen, deren Anbau arbeits- und kostenintensiv ist, z.B Weinbau, viele Gemüse, Obstbau, Schnittblumen usw. Oft in kleinem Maßstab (Gärten)
