German term or phrase: Da gab er das folgende Raetsel auf:
The main character tells a story that is like a puzzle to be solved. It's a conundrum, enigma. I tried "he told them this puzzling story" or "he gave them this puzzle." I don't want to use conundrum or enigma because it's a story for children. I don't know whether puzzle is the right word.

Sirius' solution was the one I used, but it came after UEL had hit the nail on the head. Thanks to everyone. I continue to be amazed at how difficult some simple German expressions can be. Of course, the same is true for English idioms.
