German term or phrase: Gauleiter
I need an English term for Gauleiter

context (during annexation of Austria to Third Reich)
Ivona
United States
Local time: 10:54
English translation:District Leader
Explanation:
Or: Administration Leader. Or: Adimistrative Head. Though these two alternatives could sound like heads of admin in an office, which is a completely different context. Are you sure you have to translate it at all though? I've never seen it translated, just as "Fuehrer" is never translated when referring to Hitler.

I happen to be reading William L Shirer's 'The Rise and Fall of the Third' right now, in which this term often appears
