this term appeaers on my families coat of arms , could you please tell me what it means? Thank you in advance, Steve
Steve
coat of arms of the family line (or branch)
Explanation:
The other answers have neglected "Geschlecht". Normally this just means the sex, but in genealogical terms it refers to "lineage". Lineages are usually organized in family trees, where every branch can have its own coat of arms.

coat of the family

Explanation:
Wappen des Geschlechts identifies the coat belonging to a specific family and has certain symbols which belong only to this family, i.e. the fleur-de-lis.

Hope this helps! :-)

coat of arms

Explanation:
wappen = coat of arms

Wappen des Geschlechts = Coat of arm of the clan (Geschlecht in the german sense goes very far. It could mean gender, generation whatever)

Therefore this appears to me like:

"Coat of arms of the 'family'" e.g. this is the coat of arms of the "von Reichenburgs".

The family's coat of arms/ the coat of arms of the family.......

Explanation:
I agree with the last translater that it means a specific fmily, in this case yours.
It could be translated ( if you know the family's name) as the " von Trapp" coat of arms but tat would be a more casual translation.
