Explanation:
The German word in this context does not mean cranky, and certainly not negative. It is a kind of mood which is sombre, depressed or just gloomy. I think you cannot use 'negative' in a descriptive text (I understand it is), this word is too strong.
I think the best translation is:
"Asians have a brown skin, a gloomy and melancholic temper and a tenacious(hardy, tough)build."
