German term or phrase: gnadenlose Zwang
gnadenlose Zwang zur/zum ...

I know what this means literally, but I would like to know if it is a commonly used expression. If so I would be interested to see suggestions for appropriate English expressions. (No literal translations, please!)

Thank you

unyielding pressure/compulsion

Explanation:
A commonly used expression in German? Certainly. Some examples from the web:

...zur Rentabilität
...zu Leistung
...zur Tiefe
...zum Erfolg
...zur Kürze

For English it would depend on whether it was an internal impulse/compulsion or whether it referred to external pressure. What context are you working in?

agree  lkoch99: forget my suggestion; 'relentless urge' is much better! (ps hi Lone!)

agree  Ulrike Lieder: great if it's an internal compulsion; however, if the 'Zwang' refers to external pressures, 'urge' would be incorrect
