German term or phrase: deren Rhythmus das Messer gezogen hat
About a painter: dass seine Kunst an Jazz denken lässt, der aus sich selbst Malerei macht, an Musik, die zu Farben wird, deren Rhythmus das Messer gezogen hat.

the rhythm of which the palette knife has drawn...
Explanation:
This is a suggestion, because "Messer" is really the most intringuing part here. Since we don't know who it is or what the style concerned is, I'm simply assuming this refers to a certain rhythmic manipulation of a palette knife.

Here's an example where it would have been great if I as the asker had been able to add some more information after the question was asked. The painter in question is the Frenchman Didier Meissoniers. The entire passage is a comparison between the painter and music, specifically jazz. Here music is the metaphor used to explain the painter's art. So I found Cecilia's suggestion the closest to what the passage is trying to convey. The knife here has to be the palette knife to keep the metaphor going. I once made the suggestion to ProZ to allow the asker to add clarifications later. Maybe ya'll could add some support to the idea.

(rhythm) cuts like a knife

Explanation:
I don't think this is referring to the painting technique itself-you need to find a good image that conveys the dynamic(?) style of this particular painter, correct?
You may find another expression that reflects his method/approach/effect without resorting to *knifes*, but I am just offering a few *cutting*examples here:

Musical context:
to quote Bryan Adams
(complete text @www.ohp.ch/Songs/Cuts_like_a_knife.htm)

or, in a literary context:
The Wind that blows between the worlds, it cut him like a knife,
And Tomlinson took up his tale and spoke of his good ...
www.everypoet.com/archive/poetry/Rudyard_Kipling/kipling_to...

or in the context of painting:

My search for an individual expressive mode took me through different phases and stylistic ranges. I experimented with color-schemes and chaotic forms, incisive lines that cut a surface like a knife and space that creates an emptiness that is similar a void that life sometimes offer. My work records my responses to
the varied demands of life.

Good luck!

1 hr
a clean-cut rythm, as if drawn with a knife

Explanation:
a special technique comes to mind first, but the blade of a pallet knife is very thin and flexible while painters also use ordinary knifes (plain or saw) to apply oil or acrylic paints. The effect is very different.

The comparison with Jazz makes me think of emphasizing every individual colour/instrument, using them in a combination that makes them complement each other.

So, the result would not be a 'Brei' of colours/instruments but rather a clean-cut rythm?

Good luck! :-))

adding context

Explanation:
I believe all you have to do to add information to the ongoing "discussion" is simply post an answer to your own question. This has been done by many of us before and is a quick way to make sure the information you feel will be more helpful gets to the people who are trying to help.
(unless Proz has eliminated that option in the meantime, and I'm not aware of it :-))
