Bürgerstube (a traditional inn, pub or restaurant) Explanation: There is more to a "Bürgerstube" than just "Pub" or "Kneipe". "Kneipe" is a straight forward "pub" that sometimes also serves a bit of food or snacks. But it is mainly a place for drinking. "Bürgerstube" (literally: citizen's room) is a place where traditional German, in your case Bavarian, food is served along with the local beer. The word "Bürgerstube" goes along with the image of rich, traditional food in an traditional atmosphere (which your sentence also implies). The food in a "Bürgerstube" is usually called "Gutbürgerliche Küche" (traditional (German) food. I saw this expression in an earlier posting. I would probably use the German word "Bürgerstube" here and then explain it in English (i.e. "a traditional inn, pub or restaurant). If your target audience is familiar with the German word "Wirtshaus" rather than "Bürgerstube" you could also use this word. Therefore your first sentence would be something like: "Bavarian food is served here in the rustic, cosy ambience of an old German "Bürgerstube", a traditional inn." native German speaker with lots of relations in Bavaria |
