German to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary
German term or phrase:traenenverschmiert
An old lady has just died. Her sons are griefstricken. "Sie liefen traenenverschmiert hin und her." This is a literary translation. I suppose there's no perfect direct translation, but what's closest?
Explanation: "Traenenverschmiert" I would say is literally along the lines of "covered in tears", but as you can't really use that as an expression, I would choose one of these three:
"tearful(ly)": crying or about to cry.
"in tears": actually crying.
"with tears in their eyes": speaks for itself really
Maybe "in tears" is not so good, as it can only be used if they are actually crying.
