German to English translations [PRO] Science - Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) / Cell banks
German term or phrase:ausschleusen (hier)
Dear ProZ Profis!
I am translating an inspection report and the term occurs in the following context:
Im Fall des 46/2/22-Stammes, der das Plasmid für ******* trägt, kann am Ende der Produktion kein Re-use-Test an den Bakterien gemacht werden, weil die Bakterien das Plasmid ausschleusen.
which I have translated as follows:
In the case of the 46/2/22 strain that harbors the plasmid for ********, no reuse test is able to be performed on the bacteria at the end of production because the plasmid is discharged with the bacteria.
But I am not pleased with "discharged".
What is the term in English for when bacteria "ausschleusen" the plasmid?
"R-Plasmide kodieren somit:
Spezifische Transportsysteme, die das zuvor in eine Zelle eingedrungene Antibiotikum wieder ausschleusen, bevor es in den bakteriellen Stoffwechsel eingreifen kann (z.B. Tetrazyklin-Resistenz)." http://flexikon.doccheck.com/de/Resistenzplasmid
"Bacteria usually acquire resistance to tetracycline from horizontal transfer of a gene that either encodes an efflux pump or a ribosomal protection protein. Efflux pumps actively eject tetracycline from the cell, preventing the buildup of an inhibitory concentration of tetracycline in the cytoplasm." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetracycline
is probably a suitable translation of ausschleusen in some contexts. I don't find it appropriate here.
Released is very different from ausschleusen and not appropriate here. Ausschleusen is referring to (active) transport out of the cells. Even excreted/secreted would be better than released.
I shouldn't have to add that more than subject knowledge is needed to understand the text.
Points for creativity, but excretion is at a different level of organization. At the cellular level, the undigested waste would be filled into "trash bags" and thrown out. https://publications.nigms.nih.gov/insidelifescience/cells-t...
If the garbage can't be digested by lysosomes, the cell can sometimes spit it out in a process called exocytosis.
Exocytosis (/ˌɛksoʊsaɪˈtoʊsɪs/) is a form of active transport in which a cell transports molecules (e.g., neurotransmitters and proteins) out of the cell (exo- + cytosis) by expelling them through an energy-dependent process.
