German term or phrase: fachübergreifend
Ergänzend zu den Fach-Grundkursen soll im interdisziplinären Grundkurs eine fachübergreifende Problemsicht eingeübt werden
Wilton Mills
English translation:interdisciplinary
Explanation:
fachuebergreifend means going beyond the individual subject, and the translation used normally (e.g. Werner, New English Dictionary) is interdisciplinary. This, of course, poses some problems as the term is already used previously with Grundkurse, so maybe "non subject-specific" could be used instead.

cross-disciplinary

Explanation:
I have seen this used several times by native English speakers - and it corresponds very nicely to fachübergreifend.

a broader prospective, including related fields

Explanation:
The concept interdisciplinary has been introduced, and the context already shows that fach"ubergreifend means interdisciplinary. However, the word is there to eludicate the concept. Perhaps you want to rewrite it, e.g.
"the interdisciplinary course emphasizes the a broader prospective, including related fields". BW, Nancy

Explanation:
it is definately like the one who
answered your question first proposed:
interdisciplinary
Fach-Grundkurse you could prob. translate as: subject related course load vs. interdisciplinary course load.
I looked through my college/university
brochures and this was the term used
in them.

cross-disciplinary

Explanation:
Here is my translation of the whole sentence.

To train students in cross-disciplinary problem solving, an interdisciplinary foundation course must be offered as a supplement to the single-discipline courses.

Explanation:
for my two cents worth, I almost agree with the the suggestion of ncs1, but with the difference that I think that 'interdiziplinär' is an English loan word (which means that it is very fashionable for titles), but the good German synonym 'fachübergreifend' is used in the description. To keep close to the original content, you could use something like '..., the interdisciplinary basic course is intended to train the students in considering problems in a larger perspective'. ('cross-disciplinary' may well be used, but I find it inferior English.)

multidisciplinary

Explanation:
Check out this concoction I came up with for the whole thing:

Rounding out the basic subject courses, a multidisciplinary approach to problem assessment is to be practiced in the basic interdisciplinary course.

Actually, fachuebergreifend literally means "groping over into other areas" which, if we translators were not all such an anally retentive uptight bunch, could trigger some pleasant, vivid imagery.
