German term or phrase: Realbildung
The various parts of the Austrian Reifeprüfung which is the equivalent of the Abitur. The three sections are "Kulturelle und politische Bildung", "Wirtschaftliche Bildung" and "Realbildung". Anyone know how to translate this? Some kind of "General Studies" as we have in the UK?

English translation:natural sciences and technical subjects
Explanation:
In this triad, the last group probably represents the >>Realfächer<<.
AltaVista(German)Realfach, Realfächer 18 hits, mostly Germany, Switzerland. >>Realbildung<< only 3 hits, including only one (1) one from Austria
www.asn-sbg.ac.at/schulen/hblasaal/Allg_ha.html
The definition seems to vary somewhat among different schools and countries and may include vocational subjects.
A Realgymnasium (Germany, I attended one) emphasizes scientific subjects and modern languages, but the latter probably belong to the "cultural" classification in your context.
Also cf: Realien (Duden:) (1) wirkliche Dinge, Tatsachen; (2) Sachkentnisse (3) (veraltet) Naturwissenschaften als Grundlage der Bildung und als Lehrfächer

Secondary Modern School Education

Explanation:
Realschule > Secondary Modern School
High School (US)

The Realschule is one of the choices of secondary schools available to a German schoolchild after the Grundschule. At the end of six years schooling in the Realschule pupils gain the 'mittlere Reife' and usually go on to some kind of training or to a college of further education.

Hope it helps.

emphasis on modern languages and science

Explanation:
Generally, Realbildung means a more practical education. In Austria, there is a distinction between Gymnasium and Realgymnasium - the latter offering a stronger emphasis on modern languages etc, but also on music and arts. No proper equivalent, I'm afraid, but I hope this helps a bit.
