German term or phrase: Holding
From a description of a large enterprise.
Die Holding besteht aus zwei Fuehrungsgremien.
Unternehmensplanung und Entwicklung sind der Holding zugeordnet. They also use the expression "Beteiligung." I'm not sure if they're using the words interchangebly or whether they mean two different things. Is holding company the right choice?

holding company

Explanation:
You're right; it's a holding company. As you see from the examples below, German often just refers to this as "die Holding". Beteiligung and Holding would be used interchangeably here (cf. below). Hope this helps!

Holding(-Gesellschaft) f
(com) holding company
(ie, Zweck: andere, rechtlich selbständige Unternehmen mittels Beteiligungen zu kontrollieren und zu leiten; syn, Beteiligungsgesellschaft, Kapitalverwaltungsgesellschaft)

Beteiligung f

– stake
– participation
– participating interest (or share)
(Fin) equity holding (or stake)
– industrial holding
– share of equity capital
(Fin) investment

holding/participation

Explanation:
I have no dispute with 'holding', or with the claim that 'Beteiligungsgesellschaft' is synonymous with 'Holding', but I do not agree the 'Beteiligung' on its own means 'holding'. It means participation, this is what a holding does with respect to its subsidiaries and realted companies, eg 'X Holding acquires a 25% participation in company Y'.
