German term or phrase: selbständigkeit entlassen
I would appreciate any help translating the following sentence. Or even just confirming its meaning for me as I dont feel really 100p.c. secure if I am interpretating it correctly.

die Tatsache, dass wir XXXXXX - ein Consumer-Geschäft das lange Zeit nicht gut lief und in dem wir uns als Business-to-Business-Lieferant ja auch nicht so auskennen - XXXXXX haben wir in die Selbständigkeit entlassen.

Thanks a million in advance!

English translation:relinquished control
Explanation:
The sentence is slightly muddled.
What they are saying is, that XXX was a business that did not run very well for a long time and that they did not understand very well, being business-to-business-suppliers. So they have relinquished control of the company (probably to be rid of a badly running buisness). Such transfers often are arranged, having the subordinate management take over the assets and the liabilities, sometimes remaining as a silent partner.

entlassen = to release
Selbstständigkeit = independence
but the direct translation I think doesn't hit the real meaning.
Unless ofcourse the employees are taking over the compabny, in which case they do become self-employed.

Sorry about the lengthy explanation - I had to write it to get it clear for myself.

to spin XXXXXX off

Explanation:
The explanation by "words" is quite good but the term "to spin off" is used very often today and is not negative.

The noun / modifier "spin-off" gets most of 450,000 Google hits, but the use as a verb "to spin XXXXXX off" is also possible, for example:
