society for the promotion of ... / friends of ...

Explanation:
A Förderverein is generally a non-profit organization, dedicated to the objective of promoting some special interest. In US English, this is often called "Friends of...", or "Society for the promotion of ...". If you know what it is that is being promoted by this particular circle of friends, you might wish to use a phrase such as society for the promotion of.

Here are a few examples:
Förderverein Deutsches Auswandermuseum
FRIENDS OF THE GERMAN EMIGRATION MUSEUM.

Förderverein Hamburger Sternwarte

2 days 5 hrs
committee

Explanation:
I suspect we have a case of overtranslation in some of the suggested answers here. Brits would not express this concept in this way and would only say, "I am on the committee". Later on in the body of the text you might get the chance to elaborate on what the committee does. I am a member such a committee which conerns itself with the care and restauration of antique music instruments, but I don´t say all this in one word. I just say in BE "I am on the committee". Hope this little nuance helps.
