German to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial
German term or phrase: Vertragshändler/Vertragsgebiet
In the context of the motor trade what is the difference between Händler (dealer) and Vertragshändler? And any ideas on Vertragsgebiet?
Julie
English translation:see below
Explanation:
The difference is that the "Vertragshändler" = "franchised / authorized / appointed dealer" has a very complex contract with a automobile manufacturer, which includes, among 10,000 other things, which other types or brands of vehicles the dealer may sell. A new car dealer in Germany (and elsewhere too, I think) is always a "franchised / authorized / appointed dealer" as far as I know. A dealer who only sells pre-owned / used / secondhand cars would not be a "Vertragshändler". The "Vertragsgebiet" = the "contract specified area" or "contractual territory" in which the dealer may sell the new cars. - HTH - Dan

Explanation:
Essentially confirming what Dan's explained, this can be found in Schäfer, Hyperbook Wirtschaftsenglisch:

Vertragshändler m
(com) authorized dealer
– distributor
(ie, rechtlich selbständig, führt nur Produkte des Herstellers; Grundlagen: Ausschließlichkeitsbindung, Vorzugsrechte und Gebietsschutz)

Vertragsgebiet n
(com) contractual territory
