German to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) /
German term or phrase: Methodeninsel
Hello everyone. This term appears in a cryptic list of terms related to billing, invoicing, and products for a company.

Even a general term would be useful here due to the utter lack of further context. Does it mean something along the lines of "isolated methods"?

Thank you

Own procedures (Production)

Explanation:
Production 'go their own way' and are 'a law unto themselves'

'Isolated' raises the question of who did this to Production?

BTW: I think you also need to consider the punctuation here (i.e. the forward slash). There seems to be an assumption among clients that DE conventions can be carried over into EN.

cell

Explanation:
„Insel“ (cell) is Kanban terminology:
http://tinyurl.com/y85dd93w

The item in your list refers to cells (work stations) in the Production area.

"Methodeninsel" is an individual unit/team/"island" that uses a specific production "method". I think you can safely omit "method" and just use "Cell/Production"

Cell production has the flow production line split into a number of self-contained units. Each team or ‘cell’ is responsible for a significant part of the finished article and, rather than each person only carrying out only one very specific task, team members are skilled at a number of roles, so it provides a means for job rotation.

Each cell will pass a 'product' onto the next cell in the line and is responsible for seeking improvements in processes and quality. Cells normally operate as quality circles, which we examine later in this topic. It is almost certain that just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing will be in place.

patchwork quilt of methods

Explanation:
The sources below show how the same issue pops up in different contexts. Similarly, the German and English terms seem to approach the same issue from different descriptive angles.

Again, "Methodeninsel" could be a reference to "Isolated practices" here. Maybe, on the production side, they have their own idiosyncratic ways of running things that need to be streamlined, better integrated with other processes, made more transparent, responsive etc.
