German to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Computers: Systems, Networks / Fieldbus technology
German term or phrase:im zyklischen Datenverkehr liegen
Die Prozessdaten, die im zyklischen Datenverkehr liegen, richten sich nach den konfigurierten Modulen.
I suspect that this is connected to the fact that it says that "Der Datenaustausch zwischen dem Feldbus-Konverter und der Messtechnik findet kontinuierlich statt", but I'm a bit puzzled by this phrase.
'Verkehr' in the abstract sense, especially when it refers to repeated transfers of the same or similar type, can often be translated as 'transactions'. IMO you should research the terminology commonly used in this context to see whether this is a viable option (although my experience with Profibus is that the English terminology is all over the map and not always what a native speaker would choose).
So would you disagree with either or both my draft versions? Firstly:
The process data, which is cyclic data traffic, depends on the modules configured.
The process data, which is transmitted using cyclic data transfer, depends on the modules configured.
I take it you weren't satisfied with the answers to the previously posted question on the same phrase.
Without researching this (no time now), I'd say that the data is simply contained in the regular traffic (regularly exchanged data; operational data traffic), as opposed to (e.g.) initialisation data traffic or exceptional traffic, and I strongly suspect that the commas before 'die' and after 'liegen' should disappear in English -- in other words, they are talking about the data in the regular data traffic, not saying that this data must be located in the regular data traffic.
Explanation: To me,
“Der Datenaustausch zwischen dem Feldbus-Konverter und der Messtechnik findet kontinuierlich statt"
means / translates as:
“The fieldbus converter and measuring instruments are continuously exchanging data” or
“The fieldbus converter and measuring instruments are in constant communication with one another”, etc.
“Die Prozessdaten, die im zyklischen Datenverkehr liegen, richten sich nach den konfigurierten Modulen.”
Means / translates as:
“The (or the types of) process data that are exchanged regularly (or are the subject of this regular exchange) are predefined by the modules’ configurations.”

I agree - I didn't quite realise the level of specificity involved in your question / the sentences and offered my suggestion more in terms of aiding general understanding ..........Followed your discussion with interest and have learnt something yet again!) Thanks!

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'd agree that regularly and cyclically are pretty similar, but would content that they are not the same.
Asker: Great, I'm glad it was of interest & hopefully enlightening. I guess it is in the nature of "zyklischen Datenverkehr" for the same question to be repeated at regular intervals... ;-)
