"Fürstenschulen nennt man jene im Zuge der Reformation von protestantischen Landesherren eingerichteten gelehrten Bildungsstätten, die begabte Landeskinder für den kirchlichen Dienst, höhere staatliche Ämter, den Lehrerberuf und wiss. Tätigkeiten heranbilden sollten." I am just looking for an appropriate translation of "Fürstenschule" -- or is this one of those 'untranslatable' items? Any help would be appreciated.

Asker: Thanks Kim, but the term "electoral school" refers to this particular one (St Afra) founded by the elector of Saxony. Basically a FS was a school founded during the Reformation by Lutheran princes -- to replace the disbanded monastery schools -- as places to train boys for service to the new religion (as well as the state). So I guess I will have to stick with "FS"--and a lengthy explanation in parentheses. Thanks again. Frank Gentry
