Explanation:
Trough is one translation for Mulde offered by Langenscheidt Technik.

It is important to reduce metal losses associated with the slag in the blast furnace runner. Insufficient separation gives rise to technological problems in the subsequent processing of hot metal and slag in addition to the losses themselves. By using a water-oil physical model of the blast furnace trough, the flow behavior and the separation efficiency in the trough were investigated.

Sorry Edith, this isn't my specialty. Would retort work?

The other method of atmosphere containment is to put the atmosphere (and work) into an alloy retort. The retort (or muffle) is heated externally either by gas or electric power. Typically the seal on the retort is a water cooled silicone "O" ring gasket with bolt down clamps. This requires the seal to made outside the heating chamber. This provides the ultimate in atmosphere purity. Another type of seal is a sand seal in a trough welded around the top perimeter of the retort. This allows the whole retort to be put inside the furnace.
