Bus/Financial - Engineering (general)
German term or phrase: Pflichtenheft; Lastenheft
Mentioned in an company handbook. There isn't much context; I could just translate them literally, but I suspect there is a proper English term for them. Can anyone shed any light on these, or discribe what specific functions they fulfill in a company?
"WriteAlright"
English translation:customer specification; engineering specification
Explanation:
The key difference between these terms (which can of course be translated in a variety of other ways) is that Lastenheft sums up the customer's requirements, while Pflichtenheft sums up the contractor's resulting (engineering) obligations. DEFINITIONS:
LASTENHEFT: (customer specification)

Specifications

Explanation:
They both mean Specifications - the manual that tells the project manager or similar what the client's requirements are (the engineer's 'duties') that need to be fulfilled.
E.g. cf Routledge Technical Dictionary

see below

Explanation:
Pflichtenheft = requirements specifications; Lastenheft = 1. statement of work (SOW) pr technical data package [military procurement]; or = 2. declaration of design and performance [UK,technology]; or = 3. equipment requirement (ER) [materials]; or = 4. project specification [Softwaretechnik]. The above from Bundessprachenamt, Microfiches. Schäfer, 5. Aufl., gives 1. tender specifications, 2. cahier des charges -how's that for a good English term!- (i.e. enthält Einzelheiten einer Ausschreibung); 3. performance specification [Ind.Eng.] or 4. software specifications [EDV]. According to Schäfer, Pflichtenheft and Lastenheft are synomymous. Maybe this will give you some choices from which to pick. Good luck.
