German to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Finance (general)
German term or phrase:ansetzen
This whole sentence is proving difficult to put into correct English, but I think the main problem I have is the choice of transaltion for ansetzen..ie if an insurance benefit is paid as a lump sum rather than a monthly pension then 'so ist dieser Kapitalbetrag mit demjenigen Rentenbetrag anzusetzen, der sich durch Verrentung dieses Kapitalbetrag ergibt'.
Explanation: Definitions for ansetzen in Langenscheidt, for economics, are: fix, quote, charge. They mean determine, which fits better here.
Given your context, the rest of your sentence may be translated: "The lump sum is to be determined as that amount which would yield the same monthly pension if invested as an annuity." This is the rule they use if they know the monthly pension that would be given and need to figure out the right, equivalent lump sum. The concept of Verrentung is equivalent to investing as an annuity.

Explanation: It could be that simple. Just remember there are several related terms in German. The text could have read festsetzen, festlegen, bestimmen, einstufen. From the overall context you need to get a feel, if ansetzen really carries a special meaning.
