BTW, *integrative figure* gets a few original English ggls, but is mostly used by German Web sites; I wouldn\'t use the term

you could also use *conciliatory role* in the first sentence:

He played a conciliatory role in ...

other alternatives:

1) He was a conciliator in ...

2) ... so that his image/role as a conciliator is not undermined

sth along those lines
