Hmmm.... maybe I should check before I say I don't know how to edit the gloss ! :) I just edited it to "history-averse". I'm open to changing it again if consensus dictates I should. I don't know how to "un-close" this entry though; that' s probably impossible.
Yes, that's what I thought too, which is why I thought "wary" would be okay ("wary" and "averse" are pretty synonymous). To be clear, the youth in question who could not identify Hitler are American, not German (I'm sure/I hope that was clear!), which is why such a disastrous understanding of 20th century history would unsettle more "mature" Americans. I think you've absolutely nailed it at "Germans who advocate less emphasis on their country's past." Perhaps there really isn't a more succinct way to translate the phrase. Apologies again for closing this too early. I don't know how to change the gloss, but I give permission to change it to anyone who does.

I'm not sure why you don't like "history [hyphen] anything." That's how English-speakers make adjectives out of nouns and gerunds. I'm sorry I closed this so early--lesson learned!
Here's more of the context. Denial has nothing to do with it. I think "history-averse" is perhaps the best of all. If someone knows how to change the gloss, please feel free. Context:

Maybe "Germans who would evade history -" I just really don't like history(hyphen) anything! history evading, if anything. Maybe not 'ignore', because to ignore something and to flee from it are opposite actions..

I agree with Jonathan that wary is not strong enough here. "Fliehen" does not mean "wary", it means to escape, to flee! Those who are wary of history might deny the objectivity of history or something, in order to draw attention to inconsistencies within
Asker: That makes sense! So the first sentence could be translated roughly as, "This result might encourage and make happy history-wary Germans" (right?) That makes great sense in context. Thanks!
